  SEO and Search Engine FAQ's

Here are the answers to some common questions:

Q: How easy is it to set up a website on the internet? how much does it cost?

A: Just about anyone can put a web site up on the internet and now days it is quite easy.

Go to a good domain provider like enom, godaddy, namecheap NOT registerfly and spend under $10 on a domain.

Hop over to hostgator or similar and then buy a monthly hosting account. With that will come a site maker - where you can easily set up a web site using one of thousands of templates. You can add payment processors, forums etc.

Get yourself a PayPal account and something to sell or go over to ClickBank to sell an affiliate to other products.

The only problem you will have is you want to sell promote or talk about illegal activities, terrorist activities or sex! Also if you want a high usage activity such as myspace etc.

It is extremely unlikely that you will be first in anything there are billions of web sites.

Your challenge will be to be listed in the major search engines and then get traffic - but that's another question!

Q: SEO: How to stay there once you get there?

When your internet marketing techniques are working and your ranking has got to the point where you wanted, what to do next to maintain that position? How often do you perform maintenance?  Or is SEO a one-time shot?

A: You keep upto date with SEO - follow Danny Sullivan he is the #1 guru.  You keep doing what you have been doing but make changes to meet the demands of the search engines. e.g. a few years ago meta tags were important - now they are not and then links are important, now search engines are also looking at content.

Q: What does PR mean?

A: PR stands for Page Rank - it is a measure invented by Google to show the relative importance of a site. It shows on the Google bar.

PR0 is a starter or poor site
PR1,2 are improvers
PR3 have started to establish themselves
PR4, 5 are good sites that have been around some time and have good links etc
PR6 -10 are very good sites. ebay is a 9,10

PR is built up from a combination of importance, relevance, design, content, links etc.

PR4 and above links are valued - the higher the better.

Q: How can I get more sales on my site?

A:  I can't see your site so can't give advice on it. But here is a marketing plan for you.

1) Make sure that your web site has been SEO'd (Search engine optimized)

2) Check your Google Adwords account to make sure that you are not advertising on keywords that are too wide - for example "gift baskets" . If you are in a very competive market the bid amounts will be very large. Go for the less obvious terms. Fine tune your ads and search terms at least once a month.

3)Design a product that is unique to you. Write a press release about it and send it to PRWeb

4)Write at least 4 articles a month about the joy of receiving your product or how it changes lives etc. Place them on www.ezinearticles.com  and www.articleshut.com   www.ClickingBusiness.com  has stacks of helpful information for you on how to do this.

5)Contact your local social clubs and tell them about your products. Offer to give a talk or present one as a prize (with your name on of course).

6)Design small versions of your product, that could be "thank yous" to customers and tell local businesses about them.

7) Use your web site to display your products and put the web address on all correspondence. Your on and off site activities will gradually build up your traffic.

I have some domains that I am not using at the moment - how can I make a little money with them?

If you don't want to build a site - here are a couple of suggestions:

1) Park the domain - a lot of domain registrars and hosts offer this facility. They put ads on the domain and give you a cut of the proceeds. Because they are volume users they get good prices from the advertisers.

2) Use your hosts "build a site" facility to put up a simple one/two page site with some info and an affiliate link to it. As you answer questions in forums - put this link on the bottom. Write a couple of articles with the link in your box. Doesn't take much work but it may earn money, but it is letting the search engines know you are there and building up your listing. I have a number of sites that I do a soft launch like this on.

3) If you do not want the domain for ever, offer to auction it off with a high reserve price - if it goes it goes for a profit.

4) Redirect the domain to another of your sites.
